We're taking a risk. Its Friday the 13th and we're taking a risk.
I have to admit - when we first started out with Redwood Alchemy, I had a strange and complicated mixture of naivety as well as hesitance and doubt. My doubt stemmed from the idea that a newly founded perfume house like ours would "make it", and hesitance found in the same. My naivety came with the idea that, since I had run a business before, that I could navigate this one without incident and guide us through to safe shores as an established brand.
I was only half wrong.
There is only so much a business owner can prepare for. A massive wildfire usually isn't one of them. But there we were, two days after our grand opening, and we were keeping an eye on an evacuation map and watching the sky turn red.
Then, a tree literally fell on our house.
Black Friday and the holiday season begins to come around. A time when we, for all intents and purposes, should be receiving more orders than we can handle. Yet, much to our dismay, purchases are still only trickling in. And don't get me wrong, we love our loyal customers. But five customers, as much as they might try to keep us afloat single-handedly, do not a successful business make.
So we decided to make a change. Actually, a few changes. Some of them are rather large.
The first change is that we took a look at our customer's biggest complaint, shipping. We struggled with shipping at first. In fact, we actually undercharged for shipping during our first month and paid dearly for it. Literally. Half of our profits were handed over in the form of shipping overages. Legally, you're not supposed to ship alcohol-based items (such as parfum, edt and edp) through any delivery service, USPS included, via air. The reasons for this are numerous, but the top two being that alcohol will volatize into the air at altitude and cause a potential fire hazard. The second problem with sending alcohol via air is one of broken bottles. I've seen customers from other houses that ship via first class or priority posting broken bottles. That happens because air expands as you rise above sea level. That's why you get altitude sickness when you live in the mountains a while. And that's why some bottles fracture during shipment.
Because of the inherent dangers, illegality, and potential damage of flying our products, we went with ground shipping - which is exactly what USPS says we should do, anyway. Unfortunately, driving a package to a destination is a lot more expensive than flying it there. So shipping prices went up.. somewhat drastically.
That caused a stir. Understandably, too. But I'll be honest: We had no idea what else to do. We couldn't absorb the shipping costs like we did during the first round. But customers didn't like it. And to be honest? Neither did we. So, we decided to change it. From here forward, shipping is free. On all of our items. No minimum purchase required.
If you buy one of our fragrances, we'll ship it to you for free.
We're making a lot of other changes, too. We're offering a larger assortment of sizes - 5ml, 10ml and 30ml. And of course, the bigger the size, the more cost effective the purchase.
We love and want to keep our current customers! We understand that customers may have had their purchasing plans upheaved by these changes. We are truly sorry if this inconveniences you in any way, and we promise to make it up to you. The first way we will do so is to offer a loyalty program for previous customers which will get you great deals on purchases for the rest of the year. Please contact us for details.
We wouldn't be here if it weren't for you, so we want to hear from you on how we can do better.
You're going to notice a lot of changes coming to the Redwood Alchemy Fragrance House very soon. Like I said before, we're taking a chance on Friday the 13th. You might say we're making our own luck. To commemorate our own luck-making, in addition to our Friday the 13th fragrance, XIII, we're also releasing a new fragrance called Gris-Gris. You can find those and many others at our Etsy Shop.
